세상에 공짜 점심은 없다

  미국 락밴드 Journey가 1981년에 릴리즈 한 곡으로 그들의 일곱 번째 앨범, Escape에 실린 첫 번째 곡이다. 이 곡은 당시 빌보드 넘버 9에 까지 올랐었다고 (위키피디아가 설명해 주었다).

  차분히 시작되는 노래의 전반부와는 다르게 가사 내용은 어둡다. 다만 그런 우울한 세상 속에서도 어떻게든 믿음은 잃지 말라는 가수의 마지막 메아리만큼은 힘 있게 들린다.

  이 노래를 듣고 있으면 개인적으로, 94년의 새벽 바다가 생각난다. 미니 카세트 플레이어, 라디오에서 흘러나오는 노래를 직접 녹음한 60분짜리 테이프 두 개. 그렇게 배낭도 없이 혼자 오른 이른 저녁의 속초행 고속버스. 오랜 시간 버스 의자에서 뒤척이다 도착한 검고 어두운 바다.  새벽이 되어 바지에 묻은 모래를 털고 첫차로 다시 돌아온 그날이 떠오르는 노래.
